A Day in Dublin

Wow- Irish beer is magical. 7 hours of deep sleep. Woke up feeling great and headed out on the local bus to Trinity College. We paid to see the latest exhibition including the Book of Kells and actually got to see the original documents.

We also took in the “long room”- the famous library for rare books and busts of famous literary figures. Felt strangely quiet and calming.

After Trinity College we set out to find Dublin’s famous cathedrals but it turns out that our navigational skills on foot are as skewed as our driving skills. We walked about a mile in the wrong direction but found the Irish National gallery and saw their collection of the masters

it was amazing to see the original “The Gleaners” as well as Renoir, Monet and Picasso.

Another stop on our self guided tour of Dublin was Christ Church cathedral and the crypt underneath it.

After a long day of walking back and forth, trying to figure out where things were, we ended up on a marathon effort on how to get home, which bus and which bus stop. While we were crossing the bridge over the Liffey, Stan somehow got hooked up with a woman pushing her bike. Somehow, he got a leg on either side of the back wheel, propelling himself forward as he was tripping, balancing himself by hanging on to the bike seat propelling himself, the bike and the woman forward. Comic relief helped us all forget the frustrations of the day and we laughed all the way to the wrong bus stop and back to the correct one.

We couldn’t remember our address so we called our neighbourhood pub – they polled their customers and were able to tell us what bus to take and what stop to get off at. And of course we had to stop in after the bus ride and have a beer to show our gratitude.

  1. Wow, what a day! You really saw a lot of things your first day. Lots of exercise.
Don’t forget to go to the ‘writers’ museum’. I think Stan would really like it with his literature background.
